Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week
Rhinoplasty (nose job) has one of the longer recovery timelines of all aesthetic surgeries. Understanding what to expect helps you plan your trip and your life around the procedure.
Immediately After Surgery (Day 0–2)
You will wake up with a nasal splint, nasal packing, and significant swelling. This is normal. Most patients describe the discomfort as a feeling of pressure rather than sharp pain.
- Stay in your hotel, keep your head elevated
- Cold compresses around (not on) your nose reduce swelling
- Breathe through your mouth — nasal packing is usually removed at day 2–3
Week 1: Splint On
The external splint stays on for 7–10 days. Bruising around the eyes (periorbital bruising) peaks around day 3–4 and begins to yellow and fade from day 5 onwards.
- Most patients feel well enough to take gentle walks by day 3–4
- Avoid bending over or lifting anything heavy
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated
Week 2: Splint Removal — The First Look
Splint removal is a significant milestone. The nose will still be swollen and softer-looking than the final result, but you will see the general shape for the first time.
- Around 70% of the major swelling resolves in the first 2 weeks
- You can return to desk work or remote work
- Avoid glasses resting on the nose for 6–8 weeks
Weeks 3–4: Returning to Normal Life
By week 3, most patients look presentable in social situations. Residual swelling is mainly around the tip.
- Light exercise (walking, swimming) is typically cleared by week 3–4
- Avoid contact sports for at least 3 months
- Avoid direct sun on the nose for 3 months (use SPF 50+)
Months 3–6: Gradual Refinement
The nose continues to refine as internal swelling resolves. The tip — the last area to show its final shape — remains slightly fuller than the final result.
Month 12–18: Final Result
The true final result of rhinoplasty takes 12–18 months to fully appear. Photographs at month 12 are used for before/after comparison.
Planning Your Trip
For a rhinoplasty performed in Istanbul, most surgeons recommend: - Stay in Istanbul for at least 7–10 days - Return for splint removal on day 7–10 - Follow-up via video call at weeks 2, 6, and 3 months
Patients flying from Europe can comfortably manage the trip within a 10-day window.
