Hair Transplant Aftercare: Complete Week-by-Week Recovery Guide
Proper aftercare is just as important as the transplant itself. Following these guidelines will protect your grafts and maximize your final result.
Days 1–3: Critical Protection Phase
The first 72 hours are the most critical. The transplanted grafts are not yet anchored and can be dislodged by friction or pressure.
- Sleep with your head elevated at 45° to reduce swelling
- Do not touch, scratch, or rub the recipient area
- Avoid direct sunlight and dusty environments
- Take prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication
Days 4–14: Washing Protocol
Your clinic will give you a specific washing kit. The standard protocol:
1. Apply the provided foam gently to the recipient area 2. Leave for 15 minutes 3. Rinse with lukewarm water using a soft cup — never use the shower head directly 4. Gently pat dry with a soft cloth
**Do not pick crusts.** They fall off naturally between days 10–14.
Weeks 2–4: The Shedding Phase
Between weeks 2 and 6, the transplanted hair shafts will shed. This is completely normal — it is called **shock loss** and does not mean the transplant failed. The follicles remain intact under the skin and will produce new hair.
Months 1–3: Patience
Hair growth is slow. Most patients see minimal visible growth in this period. Continue to: - Avoid swimming pools and saunas for 4 weeks - Use SPF 50+ on the scalp if outdoors - Avoid heavy exercise for 3–4 weeks
Months 4–8: Visible Growth Begins
New hairs emerge thin and fine at first, then gradually thicken. By month 6 you will see noticeable improvement.
Months 10–12: Final Result
The full density and natural appearance develop by 12 months. Results continue to improve slightly up to 18 months.
Products to Avoid
- Minoxidil in the first 2 weeks (restart after that if recommended)
- Harsh shampoos with sulfates — use gentle, pH-balanced products
- Hair dye for at least 4 weeks
Following this protocol closely is the single biggest factor in achieving an excellent result.
